Bunin was the first Russian writer who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1933. The Svenska Akademien qualified the award with this judgement:
“for the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing”.
His works were not allowed to publish in the Soviet Union until 1956.
Bunin’s poetery, but not his prose, was admired by Vladimir Nabokov.
